The Lights Ferry Road closure at McEver Road took effect Monday, Oct. 26, and it's scheduled to last until the end of January 2027. On the downtown side of the closure, the city calendar fills in on the same schedule. It starts with a holiday market in mid-November, then the lantern parade, Small Business Saturday, winter market Thursdays under the Pavilion, and a Noon Years Eve party on Dec. 31.
Put those two schedules side by side and they nearly match. Lights Ferry Road is the corridor that ties Old Town and Gainesville Street to the lake at Aqualand Marina. Its McEver Road junction is closed for the whole downtown holiday season and then some. If your Flowery Branch routine runs between McEver Road and Railroad Avenue, plan on taking the detour all season.
What Closed, and What Didn't
Hall County's Oct. 19 notice closes the part of Lights Ferry Road leading up to McEver Road so crews can build part of the new roundabout and speed up the related road work. AccessNorthGA describes the closed section as the stretch "immediately south of the McEver Road intersection." It also calls this the first phase of construction on a roundabout that will replace the current intersection.
McEver Road stays open in both directions. What you lose are the two moves that used to connect the roads at this corner:
- Drivers on McEver Road can't turn south onto the closed part of Lights Ferry Road.
- Drivers heading west on Lights Ferry Road toward McEver can't get onto McEver at the intersection.
That second move is the downtown-to-McEver trip, and for the rest of 2026 it goes the long way around.
The Detour Runs Through the Industrial Park
The county's suggested route, as AccessNorthGA reported it, runs in this order:
- Take McEver Road north of the Lights Ferry intersection.
- Turn onto H.F. Reed Industrial Parkway.
- Connect to Thurmon Tanner Road.
- Follow Thurmon Tanner Road to Atlanta Highway.
Going the other way, it's the same loop in reverse. The official detour map marks the closure at Lights Ferry and McEver and labels both H.F. Reed Industrial Parkway and Thurmon Tanner Road. It dates the closure from Oct. 26, 2026, and the county expects it to last through the end of January 2027. Hall County says detour signs will be posted along the alternate routes and asks drivers to allow extra travel time.
The detour mostly matters for timing. The season's two biggest evening events start right around dusk in late November, and an extra loop through the industrial park changes when you should leave home.
The Downtown Dates That Fall Inside the Closure
Every one-time event below falls inside the closure window, and so do the winter market Thursdays through January. Event details come from the City of Flowery Branch November calendar, the December calendar, and the city's farmers market page.
| Date | Event | Listed start |
|---|---|---|
| Nov. 12 through 14 | The Holiday Collection by Rusted Fence | Varies by day |
| Nov. 20 | Tree Lighting & Lantern Parade | 6:30 p.m. |
| Nov. 28 | Small Business Saturday | 10 a.m. |
| Second and fourth Thursdays, November through April | Winter farmers market, under the Pavilion at 5210 Railroad Ave. | 3:30 p.m. |
| Dec. 31 | Noon Years Eve Party | 11 a.m. |
The Holiday Collection's times change from day to day on the city calendar. The listings show 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, and noon on the weekend day. Details are on the Rusted Fence site.
The Nov. 20 tree lighting has the tightest timing of the season. It's a Friday evening, and the lantern parade starts at 6:30 p.m. The city's Eventeny listing puts the celebration at 5310 Railroad Ave. That listing shows both a 6 p.m. start and a 6:30 to 9 p.m. window, while the parade itself is set for 6:30. If you're coming from the McEver side, plan around the earlier time and leave room for the detour.
The farmers market's Thursday schedule needs one more check this year. In November 2026 the second and fourth Thursdays fall on Nov. 12 and Nov. 26, and Nov. 26 is Thanksgiving on the city's holiday schedule. City Hall is marked closed on Nov. 26 and 27. In December, the same pattern lands on Dec. 10 and Dec. 24. A city-hosted Christmas Market is listed on Eventeny for Thursday, Dec. 10, from 3:30 to 7 p.m. at 5210 Railroad Ave. The listing mentions Santa, carriage rides, vendors, food trucks, and live holiday music. That market doesn't appear on the city's own December calendar yet, so check the city's site before you go. The farmers market page's hours also disagree with each other. The general schedule lists 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., and the FAQ says 3:30 to 7 p.m.
The historic train depot anchors that same block, at the corner of Railroad Avenue and Main Street. Between the depot, the Pavilion, and the Railroad Avenue addresses, every downtown holiday stop is close together. Getting there from McEver is what takes longer this season.
The Lake End of Lights Ferry Road
Lights Ferry Road is how Old Town reaches the water. The Gainesville-Hall MPO's bicycle and pedestrian plan carries forward a proposed 10-foot sidepath "along Lights Ferry Road to the Aqualand Marina located on Lake Lanier." The marina is at 6800 Lights Ferry Road.
Here's what Safe Harbor Aqualand lists on site as of mid-October 2026:
- Ship's store: daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Fuel dock: Sunday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with regular and non-ethanol gas
- Pig Tales Lake Lanier: the marina's waterside restaurant, with hours posted on its own site
- Freedom Boat Club: on-site boat rentals
- Lord Nelson Boat Charter: on-site charters
- Slips and service: wet slips, dry storage, and vessel service
Safe Harbor doesn't label any of these hours as seasonal. Late fall is exactly when marina and restaurant hours tend to change, so check with the business before you make the drive. Pig Tales' site was advertising "October Features" when this was written.
Why the Intersection Is Being Rebuilt
The roundabout has been on the books for years. AccessNorthGA reports the Hall County Board of Commissioners approved the project in 2020. The county's stated goal is to improve traffic flow and cut down on backups caused by left turns. The county's bid page from 2023 describes it as a roundabout to address congestion and safety concerns at the intersection.
The county's award agenda for the Sept. 28, 2023 voting meeting names Chattahoochee Group, Inc. of Clermont as the contractor, at $2,483,686.51. It lists funding from SPLOST VI, VII and VIII. When that award was made, AccessNorthGA reported an estimate of about six months of construction, with completion near summer 2024.
That schedule moved. In February 2026, Hall County reported that right-of-way acquisition and utility coordination were done and construction was expected to start in early 2026. A Gainesville Times photo shows crews working at the intersection on Aug. 18, 2026.
The city has wanted this corner fixed for a long time. Flowery Branch's comprehensive plan lists the "Lights Ferry Road improvement connecting Atlanta Highway and McEver Road" among the Old Town transportation priorities.
The county's current forecast covers only this phase, through January 2027. Hall County hasn't published a finish date for the full roundabout. Until it does, January is the only date on the calendar. Hall County's notice says questions go to the Public Information Officer at [email protected].
